What Is a Senior Move Manager?

A senior move manager is not a removals company under another name. What the job actually covers, and when it is worth the price difference.

Senior move management is a specific occupation rather than a marketing label for a removals company. The work is the decision-making, not the lifting: what comes, what goes, where the rest ends up, and how to fit a lifetime of possessions into a much smaller floor plan.

The National Association of Senior and Specialty Move Managers runs a referral network of roughly 1,000 companies across North America and beyond.

What the service typically covers

• A floor plan of the new home, decided before anything is packed, so what fits is a measurement rather than an argument.
• Sorting contents with the person rather than around them, at a pace they can manage.
• Arranging sale, donation, distribution to family and disposal, and keeping a record of where things went.
• Coordinating the removal itself and unpacking at the other end, often to the point of making the beds.
• Preparing the vacated property for sale or handover.

When it is worth paying for

The case is strongest when the person moving is doing so reluctantly, when family live far away, or when there is a fixed date driven by a care placement or a property sale.

It is weakest when the contents are simply going, when the person moving is well and organised, or when family have the time and the relationships to do the sorting themselves. In those cases a removals company and a cleanout crew cost considerably less.

What to ask

• Whether they are working to a floor plan of the new home, and when that gets done.
• How sale, donation and disposal are handled, and who receives the proceeds.
• Whether they document donations for tax purposes.
• How they price: hourly, by project, or by a combination.
• How they handle disagreement between family members, because it comes up more often than not.
